Join Dr. James Duncan of Discover Owls and Meredith Stoesz on a winter owl banding field workshop.
Learn and discuss owl habitat use, ecology, population dynamics, research and monitoring including owl capture and banding methods.
- Three or more species of owls may be encountered including Manitoba's official provincial bird the great gray owl, the northern hawk owl and less likely the barred owl.
- If owls are encountered there will be opportunities to observe owl hunting and territorial behaviours
- If owls are cooperative then participants will observe first hand how to handle, measure, band and release owls.
- Space is limited to two (2) student participants. Those who register after capacity is reached will be placed on a waitlist.
- No refunds will be provided for cancellations within 24 hours of departure or for no shows at pick up location and time (to be coordinated by Meredith).
Bring binoculars, a packed bagged lunch, snacks and hot or cold beverages.
Cell phones and cameras welcome.
Winter boots and warm, layered clothing and personal items (toilet paper, hand sanitizer) recommended.
This will be a full dawn to dusk field trip, with the van returning to Winnipeg about 30 minutes after sunset from an as yet undetermined location.
Cost: $55.00 per person to cover costs and a $5.00 donation to Discover Owls
Organizers: Meredith Stoesz and Dr. James Duncan
